Making the Most of a Special Needs Trust
The webinar Special Needs Trusts: An Introduction to What, Why, When, Who and How, sponsored by the ABA Commission on Disability Rights, featured special needs lawyers Mary Alice Jackson, owner of Mary Alice Jackson, PC, in Austin, Texas; Bernard Krooks, a founding partner of Littman Krooks in New York City; and Robert Fleming, a founding member of Fleming & Curti in Tucson, Ariz. They joined moderator Katherine Barr, a shareholder at the Sirote & Permutt law firm in Birmingham, Ala.
The 90-minute program touched on many details of estate planning to consider in determining whether a special needs trust may be a valuable option. The decision of whether to use a special needs trust, and if so, which type, requires knowledge of many different areas of law, including government benefits, trust law, tax law and retirement accounts. Future webinars from the commission hope to address some of these issues.
